FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD OF FUNERAL SERVICES
The Board of Funeral Services Act establishes a self-governing body to administer the Board of Funeral Services Act and the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 and regulate the practices of funeral directors, transfer service operators, funeral service establishments and transfer services in accordance with the Act and the Regulations in order that the public interest may be served and protected.
STRUCTURE
The Board of Funeral Services Act, requires that the Board be composed of thirteen (13) members, eight (8) funeral directors, five (5) public persons. All members are appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council. The Board of Funeral Services Act establishes four (4) standing committees - Executive Committee, Licensing Committee, Discipline Committee and Compensation Fund Committee.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE- is composed of three (3) members of the Board, one of whom must be a public member. This Committee considers matters that require attention between regular Board meetings.
LICENSING COMMITTEE- is composed of three (3) members of the Board one of whom must be a public member. The Licensing Committee considers all matters that are referred to it by the Registrar in relation to the licensing of funeral directors, funeral establishments, transfer services and the registration of transfer service operators.
COMPENSATION FUND COMMITTEE - is composed of three (3) members (one funeral director and two public members). The Committee compensates people if:

a prepaid contract was cancelled and funds and interest accrued were not appropriately paid out

a prepaid service was not fulfilled and it was necessary for the person to obtain other services

excess funds were not returned to the estate of the beneficiary
-
a refund was not made on a contract that was unenforceable.
DISCIPLINE COMMITTEE- is composed of four (4) members two (2) of whom shall be public members. The Committee holds hearings to determine allegations of professional misconduct or incompetence against a funeral director. |
