New Personal Applicants
The Board of Funeral Services is committed to high training standards and mobility of qualified candidates to enter and practice in Ontario. The following sets out how one may become licensed in Ontario, either by completing training in Ontario or as a licensee from another jurisdiction.
Applicants Completing Their Training in Ontario
To become a licensed funeral director in Ontario, you must complete a program in funeral service education (FSE) approved by the Board of Funeral Services. The approved programs are those offered at Humber College (Toronto) and Collège Boréal (Sudbury). For information about the approved FSE programs, click on " Education" and follow the link to the program of your choice. The following steps must be completed:

Complete the approved FSE program of your choice

Complete an in service training period (internship) in Ontario

Successfully complete the BOFS licensing examinations

Undergo a criminal records check

Complete the application process (form and payment)
Applicants Currently Licensed in Another Canadian Province
If you are a funeral director licensed in good standing in a Canadian Province outside of Ontario, you are eligible to apply for a licence under the Agreement on Internal Trade. The following steps must be completed:

Provide confirmation that you hold a licence in good standing along with other details

the date the licence was first issued,
-
the date the current licence was issued,
-
the date of expiry of the licence,
-
the licence number and
-
any conditions or restrictions, or suspensions on the licence.

Successfully complete an examination on the Ontario laws
-
Undergo a criminal records check
-
Complete the application process (form and payment)
Applicants Currently Licensed Outside of Canada
If you are a funeral director licensed in good standing in a jurisdiction outside of Canada, see below for the criteria to become licensed in Ontario.
United States
If you are a funeral director licensed in good standing in a jurisdiction in the United States and have completed a program accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) and passed the National Board Examination (NBE), you must complete the following steps:

Provide confirmation that you hold a licence in good standing along with other details

the date the licence was first issued,

the date the current licence was issued,
-
the date of expiry of the licence,
-
the licence number and
-
any conditions or restrictions, or suspensions on the licence.

Provide proof that you have successfully completed a program accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE)

Provide proof that you have successfully completed the National Board Examination (from the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards)

Successfully complete an examination on the Ontario laws
-
Undergo a criminal records check
-
Complete the application process (form and payment)
Other Countries
For applicants licensed in another country, consideration will be given to the applicant's training and experience on an individual basis. Please contact the Board of Funeral Services to discuss your specific circumstances. |
